Here are your guide picks for the Top Ten Blues Releases of 2002.

1. Talking To Strangers - Shemekia Copeland

The Blues newest diva teamed with groove master Dr. John. Copeland takes it to the next level, but still captures the raw emotion that put her in the Blues spotlight in the first place.

2. Burnin' Down the House - Etta James

Blues is meant to be performed and listened to live. So when you have a live release of a Blues legend and her world-class band, like Etta James, ya gotta love it.

The most solid Blues release of the year. Straight whiskey, no chaser. Two guitar greats doing what they do best.

4. Slideways - Roy Rogers

Roy Rogers has forged a career on slide guitar grooves, and this record is nothing but. The all-instrumental release is for those who just can't get enough slide.

5. Hydraulic Groove - Rick Holmstrom

This is my pick for the most progressive release of 2002. The Blues isn't just about history, and Holmstrom's contemporary grooves show they should be about the future too.

6. Blue Moon - Robben Ford

Guitar god Robben Ford's 2002 release features his trademark style along with some of music's best sidemen. Through all the talent, they keep things on a Blues leash, which can be the biggest challenge of all.

7. Choo Choo Boogaloo - Buckwheat Zydeco

OK, it's a kids record, but it's more fun than any record of 2002. Fun wins my vote every time. Great Zydeco history lesson.

8. Soul Be It - Deborah Coleman

This live effort is just what the doctor ordered for Coleman. Her voice is great, her guitar playing is stellar, her star is rising.

Strongest release by Allison to date. Blues fans rejoice in his faithful following of the path his father blazed. It's now his trail.
