Effects can serve as a distraction to you and also the listener. If you feel the need to use them, do so SPARINGLY.
Try this approach;
Set the controls on your amp so you get a desirable rhythm sound. Set the contols on your effects at a minimum so when you turn them off, you notice something is missing. This way for example, when you turn on the distortion, it will still sound like the same guitar through the same amp.
