Delta: The fertile flat land in northwestern Mississippi located between the Mississippi and Yazoo Rivers. The region was home to hundreds of plantations that primarily grew cotton and depended on slave labor to do the hard work.
After the Civil War, the region moved towards a sharecropper system, but when mechanization of the farms began during the 1930s, eliminating many farming jobs, many African-American workers began an exodus towards the cities of the North in search of employment. Often called the "Land Where The Blues Were Born."
