Blues Singers: Because of the importance of lyrics in blues songs, the popularity of the style can be attributed to blues singers. During the 1920s, blues music was dominated by female blues singers like Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Ida Cox, and Sippie Wallace.
As time wore on, however, the women fell out of favor with record buyers, and the new stars were male blues singers like Big Bill Broonzy. The 1950s gave rise to a generation of (mostly male) R&B oriented blues singers like Bobby "Blue" Bland, Nappy Brown, and Bobby Rush, among others.
