The local community radio station, KZUM 89.3, plays more than 20 hours of blues each week. Drive-time M-F, 3-6, is all blues. Only one show (mine) specializes in old blues, but all the dj's have a good understanding of the music they play. The Zoo Bar is one of the best blues venues in the world. This W.C. Handy award-winning club features live music 6 (sometimes 7) nights a week, drawing on the best in national, regional, and local talent. With all this going for it (in a town of fewer than 200,000) one would think that there would be a thriving blues society. One would be wrong. In fact, that there is no blues society in the area is a consistent topic of conversation on my radio show. Any suggestions on how to motivate the blues-listening masses would be appreciated.
