The Blues are blessed to have so many fine artists traveling the world playing clubs and festivals. Here's how to promote a Blues show.
Difficulty: Hard
Time Required: 3 months
Here's How:
- Surf the Web for the itineraries of the artist's you want at your show.
- Pick artist's that will be in your area when you want your show. Or, plan your show when the artist you want is in your area.
- Choose a local venue that can handle your show. Negotiate a contract for the use of the venue for the specific date and time.
- Contact the artist, or his representative, and negotiate a price for the appearance. A deposit of 50% of the negotiated price is standard. The rest will be paid on completion of the show.
- You probably will have to supply hotel rooms for the artist and band. Make reservations early, and in a place where you yourself would stay. No flea bag motels!
- Most artists require a sound system and stage lights be provided. Retain a professional production company in your area. This can make or break your show. Do not skimp on this point!
- Provide a hot meal for the artist and band. Most artists would prefer to eat several hours before the show or right after.
- Contact local/regional Blues societies to help get the word out on the show.
- Post a Web Site for the show. Include show times, directions, ticket prices, and nearby accommodations.
- Contact all the local media. Keep calling, keep reminding, keep at it.
- Print posters and hang them around town. Have extras to sell at the show as mementos.
- Purchase radio spots on classic rock stations during drive time in the days leading up to the show.
Tips:
- If you can schedule your show on a weeknight, the artist and venue prices will be lower.
- Don't expect to actually watch the show. You probably will be too busy.
- Scout around for corporate sponsors and make a Blues festival out of it.
