How To Promote a Blues Show

By Reverend Keith A. Gordon, About.com

The Blues are blessed to have so many fine artists traveling the world playing clubs and festivals. Here's how to promote a Blues show.
Difficulty: Hard
Time Required: 3 months

Here's How:

  1. Surf the Web for the itineraries of the artist's you want at your show.
  2. Pick artist's that will be in your area when you want your show. Or, plan your show when the artist you want is in your area.
  3. Choose a local venue that can handle your show. Negotiate a contract for the use of the venue for the specific date and time.
  4. Contact the artist, or his representative, and negotiate a price for the appearance. A deposit of 50% of the negotiated price is standard. The rest will be paid on completion of the show.
  5. You probably will have to supply hotel rooms for the artist and band. Make reservations early, and in a place where you yourself would stay. No flea bag motels!
  6. Most artists require a sound system and stage lights be provided. Retain a professional production company in your area. This can make or break your show. Do not skimp on this point!
  7. Provide a hot meal for the artist and band. Most artists would prefer to eat several hours before the show or right after.
  8. Contact local/regional Blues societies to help get the word out on the show.
  9. Post a Web Site for the show. Include show times, directions, ticket prices, and nearby accommodations.
  10. Contact all the local media. Keep calling, keep reminding, keep at it.
  11. Print posters and hang them around town. Have extras to sell at the show as mementos.
  12. Purchase radio spots on classic rock stations during drive time in the days leading up to the show.

Tips:

  1. If you can schedule your show on a weeknight, the artist and venue prices will be lower.
  2. Don't expect to actually watch the show. You probably will be too busy.
  3. Scout around for corporate sponsors and make a Blues festival out of it.
