Boz Scaggs' MemphisSinger Boz Scaggs is best remembered for his string of mid-1970s hits like "Lowdown" and "Lido Shuffle" and best-selling albums like Silk Degrees and Down Two Then Left. Before he became a chart-topping crooner, however, his roots were definitely in the blues and R&B music. Scaggs was a member of the Steve Miller Band during the late 1960s and appeared on two fine collections of psychedelic-blues music from the band. Scaggs launched his solo career with a self-titled album in 1968 that featured Duane Allman's soulful guitar licks and Scaggs' applying his vocal talents to songs like Fenton Robinson's "Loan Me A Dime."

Scaggs has always included a bit of soul, blues, and R&B on his albums, so it should come as no surprise that his first new album in five years would skew heavily towards the aforementioned styles. On March 5, 2013 the 429 Records label will release Scaggs' Memphis, a spirited collection of classic material like "Rainy Night In Georgia" and "Corinna, Corinna." The first single from Memphis is a cover of Willy DeVille's "Mixed Up Shook Up Girl," originally recorded by the late singer with his band Mink DeVille in 1977 and updated here by Scaggs, who dips back into the Mink DeVille songbook again for a raucous cover of "Cadillac Walk."

Scaggs' Memphis was recorded, appropriately, at the late Willie Mitchell's Royal Studio in Memphis, Tennessee where the legendary producer recorded the great Al Green and other Hi Records artists. Scaggs' studio band includes guitarist Ray Parker, Jr., bassist Willie Weeks (who has played with Aretha Franklin and Bobby Womack), drummer Steve Jordan, legendary keyboardist Spooner Oldham, and the Memphis Horns. Scaggs will hit the road this spring to tour in support of Memphis.

Amazing album! Boz is better than ever. Question: who is the female vocalist on Can I Change My Mind? Leela James?
